Katsushika Hokusai, 1760-1849
The most famous Japanese artist of Japanese prints in the Edo period (1600-1868), Katsushika Hokusai, is the author of a world-famous work: The Great Wave of Kanagawa (around 1830) which part of the equally famous Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji. Hokusai also became famous with his erotic or fantastical prints as well as his sketchbooks called "Hokusai manga".
The discovery of his prints will constitute an aesthetic shock for European artists of the end of the 19th century.
